What is HIV (AIDS)?

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, a virus that attacks the body's immune system.
Once HIV enters the body, it weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to serious illnesses, including infections and cancer.

Modes of Transmission

HIV is primarily transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.

There is a symptom-free period that can last from a few weeks to several years after infection. If left untreated, HIV may progress to AIDS.

However, with early detection and proper treatment, people living with HIV can lead long and healthy lives.

What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
It is mainly transmitted through sexual contact and can cause a wide range of symptoms throughout the body.

If left untreated, syphilis can lead to serious health complications. However, early diagnosis and treatment can effectively cure the infection.

Syphilis Progression Stages

Syphilis progresses through four stages after infection:

Primary Stage:
About 3 weeks after infection, a painless, firm sore appears at the infection site and may turn into an ulcer. Nearby lymph nodes may swell. Symptoms usually disappear in 3–6 weeks without treatment, but the infection can progress to the next stage.

Secondary Stage:
Starting 4–10 weeks after the primary stage, symptoms like rash on palms and soles, fever, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes appear. Symptoms may go away on their own, but the infection can continue to progress.

Tertiary Stage:
If untreated, 3–10 years after infection, gummas (rubbery tumors) may form in the skin, bones, and organs, causing tissue damage. Severe deformities like a collapsed nasal bridge can occur.

Quaternary Stage:
In the final stage, heart problems like aortic aneurysms, and nerve damage (neurosyphilis) can occur. Without treatment, this stage can be fatal.

Early detection and proper antibiotic treatment are crucial for syphilis.

[What is Hepatitis B?]

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV).
The disease can occur in two forms: acute and chronic.

Acute Hepatitis B
Occurs when an individual is newly infected with HBV.

Chronic Hepatitis B
Occurs when a person remains infected with HBV (a chronic carrier). If left untreated, it may progress to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

[Modes of Transmission and Symptoms]
HBV is mainly transmitted through blood.
Symptoms of acute hepatitis B include fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice.
Chronic hepatitis B often shows no symptoms, making regular testing very important.

Prevention, early detection, and treatment of hepatitis B are crucial to avoid progression to cirrhosis or liver cancer

[What is Hepatitis C?]

Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV).

About 80% of people infected with Hepatitis C experience no symptoms.
When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Loss of appetite, abdominal pain, fatigue, dark-colored urine etc

In the acute phase, people may experience general fatigue followed by symptoms such as:

  • Nausea and vomiting, pain in the right upper abdomen (under the ribs),  a feeling of fullness or bloating in the upper abdomen

The risks associated with Hepatitis C are serious and can have a significant long-term impact on health.
Many people with the infection develop chronic hepatitis, which can eventually progress to liver cirrhosis if left untreated.
