HIV (AIDS)
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which attacks the immune system. Early detection and appropriate treatment allow individuals with HIV to live long and healthy lives.
Transmission Route: Mainly through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.
Symptoms: HIV weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to other illnesses such as viral infections and cancer. There is an asymptomatic period that can last weeks to years before AIDS may develop.
Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Early detection and appropriate antibiotic treatment are critical.
Transmission Route: Mainly through sexual contact.
Symptoms: Syphilis progresses through four stages:
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Preventive measures and early detection are crucial to prevent liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Transmission Route: HBV is mainly transmitted through blood.
Symptoms:
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), affecting the liver.
Transmission Route: HCV is primarily transmitted through blood.
Symptoms: Around 80% of those infected with HCV show no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they include loss of appetite, abdominal pain, fatigue, and dark-colored urine. Long-term infection can progress to chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Early treatment is essential to prevent complications such as infertility.
Transmission Route: Mainly through sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, or oral).
Symptoms: Chlamydia may be asymptomatic. Even without symptoms, it can cause inflammation in the reproductive organs and increase the risk of other STIs, including HIV. It can also lead to infertility if left untreated.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can be treated early but may cause complications if left untreated.
Transmission Route: Mainly through sexual contact (vaginal, anal, or oral).
Symptoms:
Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is caused by the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite. It is more common in women but can affect men as well.
Transmission Route: Mainly through sexual intercourse.
Symptoms: Often asymptomatic, but women may experience frothy, foul-smelling discharge.
Candidiasis
Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by Candida species (yeast). It is not strictly an STI but can be transmitted through sexual activity.
Transmission Route:
As a naturally occurring fungus, anyone can be infected.
Increased growth of the fungus can occur due to weakened immunity, stress, or prolonged antibiotic use. It can spread through sexual activity or exposure to moist environments (e.g., wearing tight clothing or swimwear for long periods) or indirect contact (such as sharing towels or clothing).
Symptoms: Itching, pain, and white discharge in the affected area (e.g., genital, mouth).
